Silicone body casts, flowing milk and a floor of sponges, on tour from Avignon to Dublin since 2022.
My role in the production
Assistant designer. I assisted the designer with research for the costumes, scenic and lighting design, kept the project within budget, and worked through the floor plan's technical details for each venue.
Props maker. The production needed silicone breasts with milk flowing out of them. I made body casts of each actress, sculpted a new upper body for each from clay, then made a silicone mould and the final silicone casts, along with fake plants and other body parts.
Stage and touring manager. Since the premiere at the Festival d'Avignon in 2022, I have toured MILK to the Venice Biennale, Théâtre des 13 vents in Montpellier, Théâtre Joliette in Marseille, the Southbank Centre in London for the Shubbak Festival, and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
About the piece
A wordless piece, 80 minutes long, premiered at the Festival d'Avignon in July 2022. It looks less at what causes a catastrophe than at how it splits time into a "before" and an endless "after", where a group of women search for their lost motherhood.
The floor is black, covered in sponges that absorb light and dampen noises. Then bodies of flesh and blood, women, enter. They are crying. Their white tears are tears of milk, the same milk they would have given their children, had they not been lost.
